Situated at Ashurst Lodge in the New Forest National Park, south of England, the Wessex Institute of Technology is an education and research center that offers higher degrees. Also referred to as the WIT, the institute was founded by Professor Carlos Brebbia in 1986 and in turn succeeding the Computational Mechanics Institute that was established in 1981. The institution was formed by the exchange of relevant information between academics and professional users within the institution.
Exchange of this information was undertaken through three crucial activities namely research, conferences and publishing.
The institution lies over 400 square kilometers of the renowned National Park, New Forest. The park lies in Central Southern England 100 kilometers from London. The park offers calm and peaceful ambiance, distant from modern civilizations that is favorable for academics. With Professor Carlos Brebbia as the chairman, the Wessex Institute of Technology is run by a board of directors that constitutes of fourteen members.
The institute undertakes its research activities with significant funding from other research organizations from all over the world. The institute has also collaborated with many universities including the University of Granada in Spain, the alma mater of Pisa in Italy and the University of the West of England in the United Kingdom.
The Wessex Institute of Technology also organizes a program that includes twenty five conferences which are held annually in different parts of the globe. The conferences are attended by other research organizations and Universities from all around the world. The objective of the convention is to form a link between research organizations and academic bodies thereby encouraging trans-disciplinary research. This annual program is also held to award various institutions with the Prigogine medal that was set up in memory of Ilya Pregogine, Nobel Peace Prize in Chemistry. Since 2004, the medal has been awarded every year in association with the University of Siena.
The institute also has a publishing service that releases conference proceedings, journals and many specialized research monographs. The conference proceedings are published within a transaction series and the reviewed papers from 1993 to 2016 are accessible via the Wessex Institute of Technology press eLibrary.
